Most of the people at the camp arrived in Greece in March, crossing to Lesbos and Chios just ahead of an agreement between the EU and Turkey that took effect. Under the deal, anyone arriving on Greek islands from Turkey on or after March 20 would be held on the island and face being returned to Turkey. Balkan countries began restricting crossings of their borders in early 2016, and shut them completely in early March, stranding tens of thousands of people in Greece.
