At least 77 killed as train derails in Santiago de Compostela
- The accident is the worst of its kind in Spain in the last 40 years, leaving more than 100 injured
- The Madrid-Ferrol Alvia train left the tracks after taking an 80km/h bend in the track at 180km/h
Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is expected to travel to Santiago de Compostela today, while the regional premier, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, will also be appearing to make an official statement. The accident happened at 8.41pm, just four kilometres from the train’s next stop. The forces involved were such that one of the eight carriages ended up 15 meters from the track.
