A 50-year-old man died at a Barcelona hospital over the weekend after he was allegedly beaten by Catalan police officers who had been called to a disturbance.

The Mossos d'Esquadra were called to the scene in the Raval neighborhood where neighbors reported a fist-fight between members of one family and another man.

When the police arrived, they tried to question one suspect, who didn't have any ID on him. The man refused and the officers began to beat him, Agència Catalana de Notícies reported.

The officers said the man, who was bleeding when they arrived, became violent with them. He was taken to the Clínic de Barcelona, where he died early Sunday morning. An investigation is ongoing.
