Fifteen killed on roads during first weekend of Easter vacation
Figure already represents more than half the total number of deaths during entire holiday in 2013
Fifteen people died and nine more were injured in 12 deadly accidents on Spanish roads during the first weekend of the Easter break, the DGT national traffic authority reported on Monday.
The figure already represents more than half the total number of deaths seen during the entire vacation in 2013.
That said, last year was the first since 1962 with fewer than 30 deadly car crashes registered over this particular holiday.
Half of the collisions involved light vehicles — five motorcycles, one bicycle and one quad. Four out of the five motorcycles skidded off the road, causing the death of the driver.
The DGT noted that 10 out of the 12 accidents took place on conventional roads, resulting in 12 deaths. The other three casualties were reported on the AP-7 and A-49 toll roads near Benalmádena (Málaga) and San Juan del Puerto (Huelva), respectively.
The traffic authority is expecting 12.5 million road trips over the Easter holidays, around 500,000 fewer than last year.
