Government wants to give Spanish tests for new citizens

Draft bill would amend the Civil Code regarding nationality requirements

The administration has proposed introducing a national Spanish-language test that will be given to all foreigners who want nationality.

The government has come up with a draft bill that would amend the Civil Code regarding nationality requirements. Some 100,000 people file papers each year seeking Spanish nationality. According to Spanish newswire Europa Press, government officials are still discussing with Education Ministry officials what form the standardize test should take.

The Popular Party in its campaign platform had already announced plans to ensure that new citizens are capable of reading, writing and speaking the language.
