The rescue team believes Julen is between 71 and 73 meters below the surface
Depth (meters)
On Sunday, January 13, two-year-old Julen fell down a borehole, made to look for water. The hole was 110 meters deep but very small, meaning rescue teams could not go down directly.
The new tunnel is 60 meters deep and reaches 83 meters below the surface
Opening: 25 cm
The next step is to clad the new tunnel and seal it with sand to stop the walls from falling in
To go down the tunnel, the firefighters have come up with the idea of a metallic capsule
This capsule weighs 300 kilograms and is lowered and lifted by a crane. It can transport up to three miners or two with equipment

Firefighters introduce a robotic camera inside the borehole
The camera cannot reach the bottom because it hits a blockage at a depth of 71 meters
CAPSULE
The team finds a bag of snacks and a cup Julen was carrying as well as strands of his hair
The bottom part of the capsule is fitted with a metallic grid that will filter the debris that comes from the second step – building the horizontal tunnel to the borehole
An excavator removes earth to get the operation underway. A base is established at a depth of 23 meters

After evaluating various rescue options, the decision is taken to bore a vertical tunnel parallel to the borehole
The next step is to excavate a horizontal tunnel that joins the borehole with the vertical tunnel. This takes 24 hours. The diameter of this new tunnel is 1x1.2 meters. The debris from the excavation is placed at the bottom of the vertical tunnel
2,5 m
