Cold weather spell sweeps into Spain

Northern and central regions brace for temperatures of 5ºC and snow at 500-meter altitude

Spain on Friday braced for a weekend of wintry temperatures brought along by strong winds from northern Europe.

Fifteen provinces were on yellow and orange alert for adverse weather conditions, especially in the northern and central regions.

Menorca and the Mediterranean coastline are also on alert for heavy waves

The lowest temperatures are expected in northern Spain and parts of the island of Mallorca, according to the national weather service, Aemet.

Snow is expected above 500-meter altitudes in the northern provinces and at around 1,000m in the southeast.

Cities such as Burgos and Soria are preparing for temperatures of no more than 3°C, rising to 5°C in Segovia and 6°C in Huesca, León, Palencia, Pamplona and Vitoria.

Winds will be gusting up to 90km/h in the Pyrenees and the Balearic Islands. Menorca and the Mediterranean coastline are also on alert for heavy waves.
