THE PP'S HIDDEN FINANCES

Socialists only happy if PM quits after Congress grilling

Rajoy will try to keep blame in Bárcenas case away from himself and party, say PP sources

The opposition Socialist Party (PSOE) has said only a resignation announcement will do from Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy when he appears before Congress on Thursday to answer questions on the Bárcenas scandal. “That he recognizes what he has done and he goes,” said PSOE number two Elena Valenciano by way of advancing the position party leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba will take in the debate.

Sources in Rajoy’s Popular Party (PP) say obviously there will be no admittance of guilt by the prime minister over the alleged illegal party funding and under-the-table bonuses to leaders suggested by secret ledgers maintained by Luis Bárcenas while he was party treasurer, which are under investigation by the High Court. Instead the accent will be on keeping the blame away from the party, saying Bárcenas exploited the trust of leaders, beginning with Rajoy himself.
