Andalusia’s Socialists shaken by resignation

Secretary in general in Seville José Antonio Viera blames "pressure" from regional bosses

Just weeks before Andalusia’s regional elections will take place, the Socialist secretary general in Seville resigned suddenly on Sunday over a dispute in the way the party slates were being prepared.

José Antonio Viera said he was getting a lot of “pressure” from the region’s top party bosses over who should be included on the slates. Viera had already warned he would step down if an agreement wasn’t reached.

The dispute involves supporters of Andaluz premier José Antonio Griñán, who is running for re-election, and those who side with the national secretary general Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba.

Griñán had supported former defense minister Carme Chacón at last weekend’s convention to take over the party’s leadership. Viera reportedly supported Rubalcaba.
