King Juan Carlos reveals his total earnings: 292,752 euros
Only half is the monarch's salary says breakdown provided in aftermath of furor over embezzlement probe into son-in-law
King Juan Carlos received 292,752 euros this year, including 140,519 euros in salary, as part of the budget allotted to him by Congress, according to information released Wednesday by La Zarzuela palace. The rest is taken up by appearance fees related to his official duties.
The Spanish monarch received over 12 months his annual salary, which was subjected to a 40-percent rate of income tax. Queen Sofía, Princess Letizia and the king's two daughters, Elena and Cristina, don't have a fixed salary as such, and their allowances depend on what the monarch gives them from an allotment this year of 375,000 euros, said royal palace spokesman, Alfonso Sanz.
On the other hand, Prince Felipe, the heir to the throne, has been getting a 70,259-euro salary, which is taxed at 37 percent.
La Zarzuela made the exceptional announcement following the king's pledge for more transparency in the royal household's accounts in the midst of a scandal surrounding a judicial investigation into his son-in-law, Iñaki Urdangarin.
Princess Cristina's husband is said to be the target of a diversion of public funds inquiry stemming from six million euros in contracts his Nóos Institute was awarded by the Valencia and Balearic Islands governments.
The major political parties praised what Popular Party congressional spokesman Alfonso Alonso called an "impeccable execise in transparency."
