Constitutional Court in crisis as three members step down

Judges tender resignations in protest at slow renewal process

Three members of the Constitutional Court have tendered their resignations in protest at the Senate's tardiness in renewing the judicial bench of Spain's highest legal body, it emerged on Monday.

The vice president of the tribunal, Eugeni Gay, said in his resignation letter he felt part of a "kidnapped court." The Popular Party and the Socialists have failed to uphold the constitutional mandate to renew the make-up of the court, a situation that led to the resignation of its president, María Emilia Casas, in January. Casas cited the "scandalous delay of over three years in the court's renewal" when she stepped down. The current president, Pascual Sala, on Monday refused to accept the resignations.
