Two injured in huge blast in Gibraltar

British military garrison rules out terrorist attack

A huge explosion tore through the north wharf of Gibraltar's port on Tuesday, injuring two people, one of them seriously.

Reports from the British colony stated that two storage tanks in the port, which contained waste from hydrocarbons used to clean ships, exploded at around 3.30pm. The seriously injured individual was taken to Málaga while the other, a policeman who attended the scene, was treated in Gibraltar.

The cause of the blast has yet to be determined but the British military garrison in the colony ruled out a terrorist attack. The earliest hypothesis was that the explosion was an accident.

The blast occurred near the cruise line terminal, where the liner Independence of the Seas was pulling in.

The cruise ship retreated back to a safe distance as a precaution and the area of the harbor affected was cordoned off by port authorities to prevent the blaze from spreading.
