Spain's most-wanted gang of bank robbers arrested

Among those detained in police raid is suspect of murder in Cambrils

Police on Tuesday arrested five members of a gang of bank robbers in an operation in Bilbao, Portugalete, Vizcaya and Castro Urdiales, Cantabria.

The five detainees are linked to some 50 bank robberies across Spain and were the authorities' most-wanted criminals. One of the gang, known as "Bravo," is suspected of the murder of Estela Calduch, a bank teller, during a robbery in Cambrils, Tarragona last year.

The Basque regional interior chief, Rodolfo Ares, and the government delegate in the Basque Country, Mikel Cabieces, described the gang as "extremely dangerous and professional, with a sophisticated modus operandi." The detainees are believed not to have committed a crime since the Cambrils job in what was described by authorities as a "preventive halt" to its activity.
