Souto de Moura is architecture's new "Nobel"

Portuguese architect wins prestigious Pritzker Prize

Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura has been named the winner of this year's Pritzker Prize, often referred to as the Nobel Prize of architecture, according to an Associated Press report.

De Moura is the second Portuguese man to receive the honor, which comes with a $100,000 grant, following his mentor Alvaro Siza's win in 1992.

Among the works the 58-year-old has constructed since opening his own office in 1980 are soccer team Sporting Clube de Braga's stadium, Braga's municipal market and Ibiza's La Casa das Histórias.

Chicago's Pritzker family have awarded the prize since 1979 to those who have made "significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the art of architecture."
