High Court to continue inquiry into ETA tip-off case
"Faisán" investigation involves alleged informant warning bar owner of raid
The High Court on Monday announced it will keep open its investigation into an alleged police tip-off case involving the owner of a bar with links to ETA, who was allegedly told about an impending raid.
The so-called "Faisán case" — named after the Faisán Bar in Irún, Guipúzcoa — broke in 2006 after authorities discovered that someone in the police force may have alerted owner Joseba Elosua that he was about to be arrested the night he was expected to hand over protection money to suspected ETA terrorist José Antonio Cau. A phone call, apparently from a police official, told Elosua of the raid, which was later derailed. Both he and Cau were later arrested.
High Court Judge Pablo Ruz ordered new forensic tests, including on phone recordings. A prosecutor had called for the case to be dropped due to lack of evidence.
Ruz also ordered the retaking of testimonies of two police officials and a journalist.
