Civil Guard sources have confirmed that the mother of the two-week-old baby who was found abandoned in an underground dumpster in the Madrid town of Mejorada del Campo on Wednesday has been arrested.

The suspect, a 37-year-old Colombian woman who has three other children, lives near the dumpster where she threw out her fourth child. After initially denying the charges, she finally confessed and was arrested on Thursday morning.

The baby was found in good health and is now in the care of Madrid regional social services.

Details of the arrest were offered by the government delegate in Madrid, Concepción Dancausa, who said the woman’s husband was also arrested but later released, as he is not believed to have been involved in the crime.

Investigators were able to quickly locate the mother in part thanks to a baby bottle found inside the backpack that contained the newborn. It emerged that the boy, whose blood type is A+, was born on June 30 at the same hospital where he was taken after his rescue.

The baby was discovered at around 7.15am on Wednesday morning when a man out walking his dog along Toreros avenue heard crying from the inside of an underground garbage container and called the Civil Guard.

Two officers, Carlos Rodríguez and Andrés Moyano, soon arrived on the scene and rescued the baby.
