A 43-year-old man from the Extremadura region died on Wednesday after being gored by a bull during local fiestas celebrating St John’s Eve, which coincides with the summer solstice.

The man, a resident of Moralejas (Cáceres), was fatally wounded during the traditional bullfight that takes place on June 24 in the town of Coria as part of the Sanjuanes de Coria, a celebration with National Tourist Interest designation.

The incident occurred when a bull was being informally fought by aficionados who had jumped into the ring

Several eyewitnesses told the EFE news agency that the incident occurred around 8.30pm, when a bull named Guapetón was being informally fought by aficionados who had jumped into the bullring.

According to a medical release issued by the ring’s infirmary, the victim suffered “an abdominal goring with a 30cm-long oblique path [resulting in] complete evisceration, and another 45cm-long goring with an upward path that broke his diaphragm and penetrated the rib cage.”

The man also received a third goring in the groin and sustained head injuries. By the time he reached the infirmary he was already “in traumatic shock and cardiac arrest.”
