Hollywood star Michael Douglas has put his exclusive mansion on Mallorca’s Valldemossa coast up for sale. He purchased the property in 1989 when he married his first wife Diandra Lucker, who had been coming to the island since she was a child. When they divorced in 2000, they reached an agreement to share the property for six months each a year.

But that arrangement saw the pair having to switch over the decoration and furnishings of the mansion every time, something that was of particular annoyance to Douglas’s current wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones. What’s more, the Welsh actress is reportedly more comfortable in cooler climes.

For several weeks, auction house Sotheby’s has been in charge of managing the sale of the property, which is located in near-inaccessible grounds. The asking price is over €50 million. According to the details of the sale, the 70-hectare site includes seven independent units consisting of five apartments with 10 bedrooms, a loft and two small houses, with room for 20 people.

Douglas invested more than €6 million in buying and refurbishing the complex, but the completed work exceeded that permitted by planning laws, landing him with a fine and an order to demolish part of the work. Douglas managed to avoid a large part of the sanction after setting up a cultural center in Valldemossa. The government of former regional Balearics regional premier Jaume Matas – who is now in prison for corruption – bought the space for nearly €5 million. The actor also received payment for his work promoting the image of the Balearics as a tourist destination around the world.

Douglas and Zeta-Jones published photos of their summer vacation this year on their Facebook page, including images of the house. The photos were taken by the actress, with whom Douglas has two children: Dylan, aged 13, and Carys, aged 10.
