Weekend likely to see 4.2m road trips as holidaymakers return home
More than 10,000 patrol officers will be checking for alcohol, drugs and speeding on all main roads
Spain’s DGT traffic authority is expecting 4.2 million road trips this weekend as people return home from their summer holidays.
Special measures will be in place between 3pm on Friday and midnight on Sunday, including additional lanes in roads with heavy traffic and driving restrictions for very large vehicles.
Around 23 percent of all commutes are expected to take place on roads crossing Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and Madrid, followed by Andalusia with 21 percent and the Valencian region and Murcia with a collective 19 percent of road traffic.
More than 10,000 Civil Guard highway patrol officers will participate in Operation Return and conduct alcohol and drug checks. Speed limits will be watched closely, particularly on conventional roads with just one lane for each direction, where most fatal accidents occur. More than 40,400 drivers were caught speeding between August 18 and 24, traffic authorities have reported.
