Spain moots ban on arms exports to Egypt
Military equipment licenses worth up to 100 million euros to be reconsidered by government in Madrid
The government body responsible for supervising the sale of arms manufactured in Spain to other countries, the JIMDDU, will hold an extraordinary meeting on August 28 to decide whether or not to revoke licenses worth nearly 100 million euros for the export of military equipment to Egypt.
Sources from the JIMDDU explained that no new licenses have been granted to Egypt since August 3, when President Mohamed Morsi was ousted from power in a military coup. What’s more, the sources said, two licenses — for radios and vehicle parts — have been put on standby.
In 2012 Spain exported military material worth a total of 50.3 million euros to Egypt, including transport planes, spare parts and trucks.
