After vacillating for a number of days, Spanish Defense Minister Pedro Morenés on Wednesday offered his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian logistic support in France’s military intervention in Mali, Defense Ministry sources said Wednesday.

Morenés is said to have offered a transport plane, most likely a Hercules C-130, to ship up to 3,300 troops being sent by member countries of the Economic Community of Western African States (ECOWAS) in support of the French intervention. Spain’s role will be limited to transporting ECOWAS troops, mainly from Nigeria, Niger and Senegal, to the Malian capital Bamako. The soldiers are due to arrive there in the next 48 hours.

Spain will also contribute 40 to 45 military instructors to a European Union mission to train Malian troops. Morenés on Tuesday said France had not asked for support in the field of action.
