Jewel thief used mom to sell stolen goods

Man made use of sophisticated equipment to rob other stores and resell them

Police have closed a Madrid jewelry shop owned by a woman whose son was part of a large gang that used sophisticated equipment to rob other shops and resell illicit gems at this establishment, the Interior Ministry said Sunday.

The closing of the shop and arrests of the owner and gang were the culmination of an ongoing investigation that began in February. According to investigative sources, the gang would use frequency inhibitors and oxy cutters at different shops across the city. Police say that members of band led extravagant lifestyles, dining at fine restaurants and driving luxurious automobiles. The suspects also gambled huge sums of money at local casinos.

Among the charges the defendants - including the mother and her daughter-in-law - face are money-laundering crimes.
