Madrid animal activists keep wolf from store

Publicity stunt for children's series stymied as Civil Guard brought in to protect endangered species

A live Iberian wolf escaped a grim afternoon of being gawped at in a store window after swift intervention by an animal rights group on Wednesday.

The FNAC store in Madrid's central Callao shopping district had planned to place the wolf, a species classified as vulnerable in Spain, in a display window to promote a new NBC series based on the children's tales penned by the Brothers Grimm.

However, the Partido Animalista animal rights group put a stop to the publicity stunt, citing a 2007 law banning any harm or disturbance to wild animals. Furthermore, the Iberian wolf is a protected species. Members of the Civil Guard's animal protection unit were sent to the scene.

Whether or not the wolf would have concurred is another matter: its acting credits already include hit TV show Águila Roja.
