No wrongdoing found in Judge Garzón's accounts

Civil Guard investigators find no evidence of irregular payments to under-fire magistrate

Civil Guard experts who investigated the bank accounts of Spanish Judge Baltasar Garzón said he received no payments from Banco Santander or any of the other sponsors of courses he taught at New York University between 2005 and 2006, it was announced Wednesday.

Garzón, who was suspended from the High Court last year for overstepping his bounds while investigating Franco-era crimes, was charged around the same time with shelving a tax-fraud case against Santander chief Emilio Botín in exchange for such payments.

Garzón also has an account with Citibank in the US, although experts said they did not have complete access to it.

Garzón is Spain's best-known judge after pursuing high-profile cases, such as former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet.
