Ryanair to cut services at Girona by half
Several routes to be scrapped following impasse with regional government
Ryanair announced on Tuesday that it was to reduce its activity at Girona airport by half after failing to reach a "competitive" agreement with Catalonia's regional government.
From October, the Irish airline will scale back the number of planes serving the Catalan airport from six to three, reducing the 46 routes it operates there to 25 and limiting the frequency of six others. Routes to Madrid, Seville, Dublin, Malta, Liverpool, Brussels, Milan and Rome will all disappear.
Although Ryanair Vice-President Michael Cawley did not give details of the negotiations, he said the Generalitat's proposal was insufficient. "It is very unfair that having made an agreement with the previous heads [of the regional government] it is now not fulfilled," he said.
