Cabinet approves new package of economic measures

The Cabinet on Friday approved a wide range of economic and social measures, including helping new businesses, as the Socialist government continues to push for reforms as it embarks on the final parliamentary stretch before next year's general elections.

Among the measures are a spending ceiling for the regional governments and more protection for mortgage holders who face having their homes seized for non-payment.

The Cabinet also authorized the Official Credit Institute (ICO) to help municipalities pay small businesses that work for them in an effort to relieve municipal debt. Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero announced the measures this week in Congress.
