One-year jail term for download webmaster

Vitoria resident given suspended sentence for violating intellectual property laws

A Vitoria resident was sentenced to a year in jail and a fine of 1,080 euros for violating the Intellectual Property Law by facilitating downloads of films, music and computer programs and offering ways to bypass protection measures on software and videogames. It was the third jail term for such crimes in Spanish legal history.

Carlos López was handed down the sentence after being reported to authorities by Adese, the videogames watchdog, and Egeda, the management organization of audiovisual authors' rights, as well as Manga Films and Lauren Films.

López's sentence was reduced from two years by mutual agreement. The website administrator will not see the inside of a jail cell, given that the sentence was suspended as he had no previous record.
